On 20 March 1966, months before England hosted the World Cup, the Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen while on public display at a stamp exhibition in central London. The disappearance embarrassed the organisers and triggered a police investigation filled with false leads and a ransom demand.
The tournament had not even begun, yet its most recognisable object was missing.
